Scooter Rider, Vicente Delgado, Killed in Fontana Accident

The California Highway Patrol is investigating a traffic accident that killed a scooter rider identified as Vicente Delgado, 82. The crash happened in Fontana, California, on Monday afternoon, August 3rd.

The accident report disclosed that the CHP received a call about the occurrence at about 2 p.m. and dispatched officers to the 13300-block of Arrow Route. The preliminary investigation uncovered that Delgado rode a motor scooter on the roadway’s westbound lane when a white van struck him.

The victim sustained severe wounds, and the medics pronounced him dead at the scene. The driver involved stayed at the crash site and cooperated with the investigation. The cause of the crash is under inquiry, and there’s no information on citation or charges.

Accidents of this nature are considered auto-pedestrian collisions, and they are frequent on California roadways. Facts from the Office of Traffic Safety show that in 2018, about 893 pedestrians died in auto-pedestrian crashes, a 26% increase from 2014, and about 14 000 suffered injuries.

California has about a 25% fatality rate higher than the national average, and no state in the U.S. has more pedestrian deaths on its roadways. OTS believes that the problem is a two-way street, and pedestrians and drivers must work together to demonstrate safe behaviors on the road.

Safety tips for pedestrians include wearing bright and reflective materials, avoiding dangerous behaviors like jaywalking, staying off the phone when walking, and looking left-right-left before crossing the street. Drivers should maintain the speed limit of business, school, and residential districts, and yield the right of way to people walking.
