A 16-year-old was killed and three others were injured Wednesday afternoon in Ceres, authorities said Thursday.
Sergio Alfaro, of Ceres, was killed in the wreck, which occurred at about 3 p.m. in the 4200 block of Blaker Road, not far from Central Valley High School, authorities reported. Three other occupants of the vehicle, also teens, were hurt as well, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Authorities said the vehicle struck a utility pole and a tree, causing it to overturn. Alfaro was ejected during the crash, causing fatal injuries, troopers reported.
Another teen was trapped and had to be extricated by emergency responders. He and the other two boys, who have not publicly been identified, suffered injuries that aren’t believed to be life-threatening.
A Ceres police spokesman told local media outlets that drugs and alcohol are not believed to have been factors in the wreck. However, excessive speeding is likely, he said.
Multiple agencies, including the California Highway Patrol, which was conducting training with Ceres police, responded to the scene. A stretch of Blaker Road was closed for hours as emergency responders sorted through debris and other evidence.
The incident remains under investigation by the Ceres Police Department Accident Investigation team.
