Police are investigating the death of an off-duty Sheriff’s deputy who met his end after his vehicle rear-ended another car along I-15 in Hesperia, California. The identity of the deceased deputy was disclosed as Garret Pontier, 22, of Apple Valley.

The accident reports provided by the California Highway Patrol Victorville Office confirmed that the fatal collision took place on Tuesday, March 31. Another victim was injured as a result of the crash, which took place at precisely 1:30 am.

As reported, the 22-year-old new graduate of the Sheriff’s Academy was driving his 2003 Honda Accord northbound on the #2 lane of Interstate 5. For unknown reasons, the deputy crossed the dividing line into the #3 lane, colliding with the rear of another northbound vehicle, a semi tractor-trailer.

The impact of the collision caused the motorist and his sole passenger life-threatening injuries. Paramedics arrived shortly after and declared the officer dead on the scene.

However, the passenger, a 21-year-old male resident of Rancho Cucamonga, was airlifted to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center for prompt medical attention. The driver of the semi, who was not named in the accident reports, escaped the mishap unscathed.

The CHP Victorville Area is handling all investigations into the fatal wreck, and have urged anyone with useful information regarding the crash to contact the area office.

Garret Pointier had served as a deputy at the High Desert Detention Center since his graduation in December 2019.
