A single-vehicle crash on 118 Freeway ended the life of a woman from the Simi Valley area of California. The accident happened on Monday morning, February 24th, and the Ventura County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the woman as Shirley Lapham, 62.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the accident happened a little after 3 a.m. The CHP got a call about the crash and rushed down to the freeway at Kuehner Drive.
When they arrived, they found the deceased alone in a Ford SUV, unresponsive. A preliminary investigation uncovered that the woman was heading west on the 118 from the Kuehner Drive on-ramp.
Lapham, for reasons the authorities haven’t uncovered, drove the Ford from the main road of the freeway to the right shoulder. What followed was the vehicle overturning and landing on its roof.
The woman died on the scene from the injuries she sustained from the crash. The CHP is investigating what caused Lapham to drive on the right shoulder, and have asked any witnesses with credible information to contact their Moorpark office.
When a single-vehicle crash occurs, investigating officers look into the driver’s impairment and negligence. So far, authorities have not stated if the driver was impaired in any way.
Motorists should always maintain the proper lane and the right speed when driving. They should watch out for the flow of traffic, and drive accordingly without going too fast or too slow.
On freeways, the far-left lane is used for faster traffic and the far-right for slower traffic. Drivers should, therefore, select a roadway suitable to their speed and maintain it.
