A young woman lost her life when the car she was traveling in had a fatal accident close to Redwood City, California. On Monday, February 24th, the San Mateo County Coroner’s Office identified her as 18-year-old Silvia Chalista, of San Jose.

The cause of death got listed as an accident resulting from blunt force trauma. The coroner didn’t run a toxicology test as the deceased was a passenger, not the driver of the ill-fated vehicle.

Chalista, according to the California Highway Patrol, was traveling in an Audi sedan alongside her friend, Natasha Leodjaja, 18, of San Jose. The accident happened at about 3 a.m. on U.S. Highway 101 near Whipple Avenue, on Sunday, February 23rd.

The Audi went off the road at what CHP described as a “Freeway speed” and crashed into a utility pole. The car rolled over, leaving the two women trapped inside until emergency services arrived.

Paramedics pronounced Chalista dead at the scene, and Leodjaja got taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. A breathalyzer test confirmed to the authorities that the young woman drove under the influence.

When Leodjaja got released from the hospital on Monday, she got arrested and charged with felony DUI and vehicular manslaughter. Both offenses are taken seriously by the courts in California.

With both offenses, the young woman is facing prison time not less than four years, a fine not less than $5000, and suspension of her driving privileges for a minimum of three years.

Alternatively, Leodjaja faces a five-year probation period for the DUI. During that time, she would not be allowed to drive with alcohol in her system and will submit herself for random tests to check her BAC.
