A two-vehicle car crash in Fresno, California, on Sunday, March 1st, left a man severely injured and two others with a minor injury. Authorities identified the critically injured man as 56-year-old, Sixto Flores Lopez.

According to the California Highway Patrol, Lopez caused the accident when he left his eastbound lane on California Avenue, into the roads heading west on Cornelia Avenue. The illegal turn made him crash into an oncoming vehicle driven by Kenda Gutierrez, 44, from Kerman.

Authorities responded to a call about the crash at about 8:20 p.m., and when they got to the scene, they found Lopez severely injured. Gutierrez’s passengers, whom the CHP identified as two minors, sustained moderate injuries.

Lopez and the passengers got transported to the Community Regional Medical Center, where they received treatment. A breathalyzer test uncovered that the injured man was driving under the influence.

The CHP arrested him, and he got booked into the Fresno County Jail. The investigation is still ongoing, and the CHP has asked anyone with credible information to contact their office.

A DUI charge is considered severe in the state of California. Courts frown at drivers going behind the wheel when intoxicated and putting their lives and that of other road users in danger.

The court will take into consideration if the driver is a first-time offender or not, in giving a verdict. It would also look at whether or not the charge against the offender is a misdemeanor or a felony, and in both cases, the person will have to go to jail, pay a fine, or both.
