A late-night collision in Placerville, California, on Friday, 28 February, left a man severely injured according to reports from the Placerville office of the California Highway Patrol.
A 64-year-old resident of Somerset, Norm Dillinger, driving a Toyota Corolla, was traveling north on Grizzly Flat Road when a southbound Volkswagen hatchback driven by a 17-year-old crossed into Dillinger’s lane, according to reports.
The 64-year-old driver attempted to prevent the collision by hitting his brakes when the left front of the Volkswagen struck the left front of the Toyota. The impact sent the Toyota Corolla into a spin before it struck an uphill dirt embankment on the right shoulder of the road.
Dillinger sustained injuries from the crash, which the California Highway patrol categorized as “major injuries.” He was first transported to Marshall Hospital following the accident. He was later moved to an undisclosed medical facility.
The teenage driver did not report any injury from the crash.
According to a study from the National Safety Council in 2001, about 9,500 people died from seat-belt related accidents alone. Between then and now, the number has more than doubled. Here are tips to keep you safe on the road:
While driving your surroundings, stay alert. Look and listen for approaching vehicles. Be careful of blind spots, especially when windshield pillars or highway road signs cover them.
Exercise patience when making a bend or pulling into an intersection. Vehicles can appear out of nowhere very quickly, so exercise caution.
Perform car and engine checkups and maintenance regularly. A faulty brake can be a contributing factor to an accident.
