Accident reports revealed that a man who was killed in a traffic accident last week Thursday after his vehicle crashed into an irrigation pond in Napa, California has been identified. The Napa County Sheriff’s Office on Saturday, April 4, disclosed the fatal victim’s identity as Chancellor Steven Goforth, a 30-year-old resident of Paso Robles.
The single-vehicle accident occurred at about 3:45 am on Thursday, April 2. Officers of the California Highway Patrol were dispatched to the scene of the crash upon reports of a single-car crash on 2253 Dry Creek Road.
Responding officers determined that a Toyota was heading east on Creek Road when it suddenly veered off the driveway and skidded down an embankment.
The vehicle eventually came to rest in a pond, located near the Olney Family Vineyard, Cave, and Winery. The car sunk into the pond before the rescue crew arrived.
Authorities confirmed that one of the two occupants of the Toyota, Peter Olney, 27, of Napa escaped from the vehicle before it sank.
Emergency responders managed to get the other occupant out of the submerged vehicle, but he never made it out alive. Paramedics pronounced the victim dead at about 4:52 am.
Officers of the CHP believe alcohol may have contributed to the crash. None of the occupants were restrained by a seatbelt at the time of the fatal wreck, as disclosed in the accident reports.
The incident remains under investigation.
