On Sunday, August 30th, the Sunnyvale Police reported that they have in custody the driver involved in an accident that killed a 13-year-old female teen. Bryan Gonzalez-Lopez, 18, drove the vehicle involved in the solo crash in Sunnyvale, California.
In a press release, the police said that officers responded to the area of Central Expressway between Mary Avenue and Bernardo Avenue around 1:50 p.m. for an accident report. When they arrived, they found a wrecked vehicle on the eastbound lane and the female passenger with severe injuries.
The teenager was unresponsive, and the medics pronounced her dead. Officers determined that Gonzalez-Lopez was under the influence at the collision time and arrested him on suspicion of DUI and vehicular manslaughter.
The police said that the Major Accident Investigation Team responded at the crash site and helped with the preliminary investigation. The facts leading to the crash are not immediately available, but the investigation remains active. Anyone with relevant information should contact Investigator Bradley Militano.
According to the Center for Disease Control, motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for teens in the United States. The center believes that traffic accidents involving teenagers are preventable if they follow the laid down strategies and laws designed for their safety.
They cover driving with an adult when newly licensed, obeying the speed limit, and driving without impairment of drugs or alcohol. Others cover the enforcement of traffic rules and regulations by traffic agencies, like seatbelt usage and punishing offenders.
