Updated reports of a car accident in East Oakland, California, revealed the name of the woman killed in a two-vehicle collision in the city. On Thursday, July 16th, the Alameda County Coroner named Tahara Day, 31, of San Leandro, as the fatal victim.
The woman lost her life on Monday night, July 13th, after the car she was riding in as a passenger collided with a semi-truck. The initial crash report placed the time of the incident at around 11:28 p.m. on 68th Avenue and Foothill Avenue, a short distance from the Eastmont Police substation.
Day was in a Mercedes driven by a 33-year-old Hayward resident. The car was westbound on Foothill when it collided with a semi-truck traveling south on 68th A. for unknown reasons. The Oakland Police said that the truck kept going after the collision, crashed into a vacant building, and caught fire.
The victim died at the scene while the Mercedes driver and a 14-year-old female passenger suffered injuries. The medics took the two to the hospital, but there’s no indication of the relationship they shared with Day.
The semi-truck driver identified as a 37-year-old man from Visalia suffered burns and other undisclosed injuries, and the paramedics took him to the hospital. The police said he is in stable condition, and they also revealed that he works weekdays at the Port of Oakland.
The intersection where the crash occurred had traffic signals, and the police are investigating to see if either of the cars involved failed to stop for a red light. They indicated earlier that drugs or alcohol might have played a role, but there’s no confirmation. Anyone with helpful information should contact the OPD traffic investigators.
