A woman was in Police custody on Sunday, August 23rd, following a DUI crash that left a California Highway Patrol officer injured. The incident leading to her arrest took place in Tulare County, California.
Jail records showed that 26-year-old Tristin Renne Zurita was behind the wheels of a car reported stolen earlier. Two CHP officers handling the investigations into a stalled vehicle pulled over on the side of the road near Betty Drive. While one of the officers exited the cruiser, the other remained seated inside, with his side door open.
Zurita, who was traveling through the Goshen area, came on to the officers from behind and struck the police cruiser. The impact ejected one of the CHP officers from the patrol vehicle, through the opened door. The officer sustained undisclosed injuries, and medics transported him to Kaweah Delta Medical Center, Visalia. According to the reports, the second lawman went unscathed.
Meanwhile, Zurita suffered minor injuries, and also received transportation to the hospital. Investigating officers determined she was under the influence of alcohol, and ultimately arrested her on DUI charges. She remains held at the Tulare County Pre-trial Facility.
Driving under the influence of alcohol is a serious misdemeanor offense that could attract up to $1,000 legal fine. Depending on the resulting implication of the crime and the expertise of the representing drunk driving attorney, this charge may also attract prolonged jail time. Therefore, it is paramount to avoid such occasions altogether by obeying traffic safety regulations.
