A pedestrian was killed in San Francisco, California, on Sunday morning, March 1st, in a vehicle-versus-pedestrian accident. The Medical Examiner’s Office identified the pedestrian as a 67-year-old female, Rui Xai Zhen.
The accident occurred in the area of Taylor and Geary Streets in the Tenderloin neighborhood. According to the report by the San Francisco Police Department, Zhen was hit by a pickup truck while walking across a crosswalk at the intersection.
A city street cleaner, whose name the police did not release, was going north on Taylor Street in the pickup. Suddenly, the driver turned into the westbound Geary Street and struck Zhen.
When paramedics arrived, they found the woman with life-threatening injuries, lying on the street. They rushed Zhen to the San Francisco General Hospital, where she passed away from her injuries.
Alcohol and drugs do not seem to have played a role in the accident. The police confirmed the identity of the street worker with the San Francisco Public Works, and investigation into the accident is still ongoing.
Traffic collisions occur regularly in California and often lead to fatalities. Drivers, going over the speed limit and not stopping in time when they see a pedestrian is one of the common causes of vehicle-versus-pedestrian accidents.
To this end, traffic authorities have asked drivers to maintain the speed limit when driving through intersections. A driver is not permitted to go beyond 15 mph at a blind intersection, which is an intersection without a stop sign, and he or she should only make appropriate turns to the right lanes.
