On Wednesday, June 10th, the California Highway Patrol released the name of the teenager who passed away in a multiple-vehicle crash in Livermore, California. Victor Herrera, 19, passed away on the afternoon of Thursday, June 4th.
According to the CHP, the accident report came in at about 3:50 p.m., and they dispatched officers to Interstate Highway 580 near north Livermore Avenue. They found out that Herrera was driving a 2000 Honda Accord in the No. 1 lane of the highway when the collision occurred.
The victim slammed into the rear of a 2013 GMC that stopped at a stop sign, and the impact caused the vehicle to crash into the back of a 2007 Chevrolet Silverado driven by a 40-year-old Lathrop man. A 64-year-old man from Moraga driving a Chrysler Pacifica then rear-ended Herrera’s Accord.
The third driver did not notice the crash in time and was unable to stop. The victim died at the scene. The CHP did not release details on the state of the other drivers. The investigation remains active.
Motor vehicle accidents are one of the leading causes of death of teenagers in the United States. The Center for Disease Control states that male teens between the age of 16 and 19 are more likely to crash their vehicles than female teenagers.
A common cause of teenage accidents is inexperience with newly licensed teens crashing their vehicles within the first month of obtaining their driver’s license. Others are speeding, lack of seat belt use, alcohol use, night time, and weekend driving.
