The California Highway Patrol has apprehended a suspected DUI motorist after hitting a bicyclist and fleeing the scene of the accident, leaving the victim in a critical condition.
The collision between the car and the bicycle occurred at about 11 p.m on Monday, March 2, at an intersection between Orangewood Avenue and Euclid Street in Garden Grove, California, as reported by local news sources within the city.
Highway patrol confirmed the accident was a hit-and-run case, by a motorist driving a Chevrolet Suburban. Following the incident, the perpetrator, who has since been identified as Victor Medina, was located and accosted about a quarter-mile away from the scene of the crash.
Sobriety tests ran on the apprehended driver suggested a possible impairment by a controlled substance. The 26-year-old Victor Medina was arrested on the grounds of felony hit-and-run and suspicions of driving under the influence of alcohol.
The bicycle rider sustained multiple injuries and was taken to an area hospital shortly after the state’s highway patrol responded to the accident.
Firefighter paramedics administered field first aid on the man prior to his transfer to the hospital. The severely injured victim was conscious at the time of his hospitalization.
Police confirmed that the cyclist had the right of way before the crash, exempting him from possible faults. The victim was not immediately identified, and no further information has been released concerning the incident.
Investigations into the situation are ongoing. Eyewitnesses were urged to contact the city’s police traffic investigator, Paul Ashby, with useful information to facilitate a more effective investigative procedure.
