Visalia DUI Crash Kills Bicyclist, Wesley Wentker

In Visalia, California, a DUI accident claimed the life of Wesley Wentker, 63, on Tuesday evening, July 14th. The crash happened at the intersection of Santa Fe Street and K Road, a little before 6:20 p.m.

According to the Visalia Police Department, the victim was riding his bicycle westbound on K Road when he failed to stop at an intersection on Santa Fe. At the same time, a GMC Yukon driven by Joreill Cabral, 28, traveled on the same roadway. The two men collided, and Wentker sustained severe injuries.

The medics took the man to Kaweah Delta Medical Center, where medical personnel pronounced him dead. The police determined that Cabral was under the influence of alcohol and arrested him on suspicion of DUI. The investigation into the crash is ongoing.

Driving while impaired is one of the leading causes of crash-related deaths in California. Under the state’s laws, a driver who consumes intoxicating substances and gets behind the wheel is liable to answer for a DUI. Prosecutors charge it as a misdemeanor or felony depending on the circumstances of the case.

A person convicted of the offense would spend time in jail, pay a fine, have his or her driver’s license revoked, and attend a compulsory alcohol re-education program. The number of times a person has committed the offense would also factor in the severity of the punishment. Drivers can avoid the preceding by driving without impairments and practicing safe road habits.
