The wrong-way driver killed in a head-on collision on Interstate 5 in California’s Woodland area has been identified. On Tuesday, September 1st, the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as Ernest Gonzalez, a 46-year-old Woodland resident.
The California Highway Patrol stated in the car accident report that the crash happened on Saturday evening, August 29th. At about 11:52 p.m., a call came in about a traffic collision involving a wrong-way driver who traveled southbound in the northbound lane of I-5 north of Highway 99.
When officers arrived at the scene, they determined through a preliminary investigation that Gonzalez drove a Honda Accord south on the interstate’s north lanes and collided with a Toyota Camry. The collision force sent the victim’s car into the air, and its left side hit a Volvo D13 heading north.
Gonzalez suffered severe injuries and passed away at the crash site. The driver of the Camry, whom the CHP identified as a Sacramento male, suffered significant injuries, and the medics took him to a nearby hospital for treatment.
The 38-year-old male driver of the Volvo from Moore, Idaho, suffered minor injuries and received treatment. The investigation into the accident is ongoing, and there’s no additional information at this time.
Driving on the wrong way is one of the leading causes of motor vehicle accidents. Under the California Vehicle Code, it is an offense for a driver to drive in the direction other than the one a lane was intended for. Offenders are liable to pay a fine and would face more severe punishment if an accident occurs.
