A man caused a fatal car crash at Oxnard, 53 miles from Glendale, California, on Tuesday, March 3rd. The police identified him as Zachary Archuletadiaz, 21, of Port Hueneme.
The crash occurred at Rose Avenue near Rio Mesa High School. Archuletadiaz was driving a Ford Freestyle when he crashed into a Lexus ES300 driven by a female driver identified as a 67-year-old woman from Ventura.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the crash occurred at 3:25 p.m., precisely south of Central Avenue. Archuletadiaz was heading south when he suddenly crossed over the median and collided with the Lexus.
The woman driving the vehicle sustained severe injuries and died at the scene. A passenger in the Lexus with the older woman was also severely injured, as well as Archuletadiaz.
The passenger and the young man were taken to the Ventura County Medical Center for treatment. Afterwards, the police arrested Archuletadiaz on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs.
The investigation is still ongoing, with the CHP taking point. Anyone with helpful and credible information about the crash should contact the CHP office in Oxnard.
Under California law, a person is said to have driven under the influence if he or she was intoxicated with drugs, alcohol, or both when behind the wheel. The person must have driven a vehicle and tested above the BAC limit.
When this happens, the person faces a DUI charge, which is punishable with imprisonment, fine, or both, and suspension of driving privileges. When the intoxicated person kills while under the influence, he or she faces a vehicular manslaughter charge and prison time upon conviction.
