Police ID 3 Men Killed In Lincoln Plane Crash As Mitchell Janssen, Matthew Hanson, Kevin Chapman

Authorities have identified the three men killed in an airplane crash Tuesday morning along U.S. 55 in Logan County.

Mitchell W. Janssen, 22, of Princeville, Matthew R. Hanson, 33, of Pulaski, Wis., and Kevin G. Chapman, 30, of Urbana, all died from injuries sustained in the crash, according to a social media post from the Illinois State Police that was published earlier today.

Authorities said the plane, a small Cessna piloted by Janssen, left the Central Illinois Regional Airport in Bloomington on Tuesday morning. At 8:49 a.m., it crashed onto U.S. 55 southbound near Lincoln.

Hanson and Chapman were described in the Illinois State Police social media post as “passengers” in the plane. Additional details weren’t immediately available.

The plane wreckage quickly was engulfed by flames, prompting a multi-hour shutdown of traffic in the area. Motorists were diverted by the Illinois Department of Transportation and the road did not reopen until about 2:30 p.m.

The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the crash. The National Transportation Safety Board has not yet released a preliminary report or any information about the potential cause of the crash.
