Authorities said a man was arrested on a fourth charge of driving under the influence after he crashed his vehicle into a Massachusetts State Police squad vehicle in Fitchburg.
Craig Jatrinski, 48, of Fitchburg, was arrested shortly after the wreck, which occurred just before midnight Monday, according to the Massachusetts State Police. No injuries were reported as a result of the wreck.
Jatrinski will need to obtain the services of a drunk driving attorney to represent him during upcoming court proceedings.
Authorities said a trooper had pulled over a vehicle on Summer Street in Fitchburg at about midnight Monday. While the trooper, who was not identified by authorities, was out of the squad car, it was struck from behind by Jatrinski, according to crash reports.
The trooper’s squad car was parked with its blue lights activated at the time of the wreck, authorities said.
Jatrinski reportedly had slurred speech and showed other signs of intoxication. He was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, driving an unregistered motor vehicle, operating while suspended and failure to move over for an emergency vehicle, troopers said.
Authorities said Jatrinski was charged three times previously with driving under the influence. Because he reportedly refused to take a breathalyzer test, his license will automatically be suspended.
Jatrinski is due to be arraigned in Fitchburg District Court. If convicted, Jatrinski faces up to five years in prison and significant fines.
He will need a drunk driving attorney to represent him during his arraignment and other criminal proceedings.
