A Massachusetts man was killed Monday night when he crashed his vehicle into a utility pole in Lowell, according to local authorities.
Jaime Cortijo, 31, of Dracut, was pronounced dead at the scene of the wreck, which occurred at about 9:15 p.m. Monday, according to the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office. No other vehicles were involved and car accident reports do not list any other injuries connected to the incident.
Authorities said Cortijo was driving near Lake View Avenue and Ottawa Street in Lowell at about 9:15 p.m. when he lost control of his vehicle. Cortijo apparently crashed into a telephone pole, according to car accident reports.
Emergency medical personnel were called to the scene, but Cortijo succumbed to his wounds before he could be transported to an area hospital for treatment, authorities said. Car accident reports available Wednesday do not list any other passengers in his vehicle.
Authorities have released few details about the crash. Investigators reportedly found the wreckage of Cortijo’s vehicle at the scene, but have not yet determined what caused the incident.
The Middlesex District Attorney’s Office and the Lowell Police Department continue to investigate the wreck. Authorities have not said whether they suspect the involvement of intoxicants or other contributing factors, such as excessive speed or inattentive driving.
Cortijo’s loved ones launched a GoFundMe campaign to raise money for funeral expenses. More than $2,000 had been raised as of Wednesday.
