Authorities this week said they have arrested a man who allegedly was drunk behind the wheel when he fatally struck a pedestrian Friday in Bellingham.
Richard Latraverse, 73, faces two counts of motor vehicle homicide – one by negligent operation and other by drunken driving– driving under the influence, leaving the scene of a fatal accident and driving to endanger, prosecutors said. Additional court proceedings are set for Monday.
Police said Latraverse was driving on Center Street on Friday in Bellingham when he struck a pedestrian, causing fatal injuries. However, authorities have released few details about the incident, including the time of the crash, details about the injuries that led to the victim’s death and the name of the victim.
A spokesman for the Worcester District Attorney’s Office told local media outlets the name of the victim is being withheld pending notification of next-of-kin. It is unclear whether other factors might have contributed to the incident.
Latraverse allegedly left the scene after the incident. However, he later returned while authorities still were investigating and identified himself as the driver.
The Associated Press reported that Latraverse was released without bond, but conditions of his release will be addressed during next week’s court proceedings.
