Five-year-old Angela Huerta died after a hit and run vehicle struck her. The incident occurred as she and her sister were crossing the street in Harlingen Texas on Sunday, January 26, 2020. Her sister Leslie, 20, also received serious injuries.
The sisters were crossing the intersection of Stuart Place Road and the westbound frontage road of Interstate 2. Angela was helping her older sister sell newspapers at the time.
At about 9:15 a.m., a gray 2012 Hyundai Elantra struck the pedestrians. The driver then fled the scene without stopping to help.
Officers responded at 9:17 a.m. and transported both victims to the hospital. Sadly, Angela died as a result of her injuries.
The Primera Police Department found the vehicle at a residence in Primera. They then arrested the driver, Jose Ricardo Trujillo, 42, of Harlingen at 11 a.m.
Harlingen Police have charged Trujillo with two felony charges. One of the charges is an accident involving Angela Huerta’s death, which is a second degree felony. The other charge is an accident involving serious bodily injuries to Leslie Huerta, which is a third degree felony. Trujillo’s bond is set at $350,000 for both charges.
The Harlingen Police Department Highway Enforcement Unit and Major Crimes Unit are still investigating the circumstances of the crash that killed Angela Huerta.
