Federal investigators have determined that the pilot of a plane that crashed nearly two years ago near Crozet had alcohol in his system at the time of the fatal incident, according to a new report.
Kent Carr, 51, of Staunton, died in the crash, which occurred April 15, 2018, when Carr was about 15 miles from the Shenandoah Valley Regional Airport, the National Transportation Safety Board Reported. No other injuries were reported as a result of the wreck.
After an extensive investigation, the NTSB determined Carr had an illegal amount of intoxicants in his system at the crash. He also had apparently taken an over-the-county antihistamine that can cause drowsiness, NTSB officials reported.
Carr reportedly flew a private Cessna plane from the Richmond Executive-Chesterfield County Airport on April 15 without filing a flight plan. About 30 minutes later, the plane crashed into the ground, striking trees and a hill near Crozet, authorities said.
The area was experiencing severe weather, including tornado warnings, at the time of Carr’s fatal flight, according to the report. A witness also told investigators that Carr had a few drinks shortly before he boarded the plane, even though regulations require flight crew members abstain from drinking for at least eight hours prior to taking off.
