Authorities said the driver who fled the scene of a fatal crash in Prosser on Friday was intoxicated and will face criminal charges.

Santiago Acostanavarrate, 35, of Prosser, died at the scene of the crash, which occurred on Washington 221 Friday evening, according to the Washington State Patrol. No other injuries were reported as a result of the crash.

Troopers said Ronald C. Jones, 43, of Horseshoe Bend, Idaho, was driving south on Washington 221 south of Carter Road. Acostanavarrate was driving north on the state highway at the same time.

Acostanavarrate reportedly crossed the centerline and struck Jones’ vehicle. The force of the crash resulted in fatal injuries for Acostanavarrate, who was reported dead at the scene by emergency responders, according to authorities.

Jones fled the scene, but was arrested by authorities not long after. He was faces charges of driving under the influence and leaving the scene of a crash.

Jones was booked into the Benton County Jail, where he remains held without bond. Online court records don’t list any upcoming hearing dates, though most court activities in the state of Washington have been postponed due to the outbreak of COVID-19.
