Eric Griswold Dies After Single-Vehicle Motorcycle Crash Near Gig Harbor

Authorities have identified the motorcyclist who died Saturday afternoon in a single-vehicle wreck near Gig Harbor.

Eric A. Griswold, 55, of Lakewood, died at a nearby hospital shortly after the crash, which was reported at about 3 p.m. Saturday, according to the Washington State Patrol. A passenger on Griswold’s motorcycle also was injured, according to car accident reports, but she is expected to survive.

Authorities said Griswold was driving his motorcycle east on Washington 16 near Burnham Drive at about 2:50 p.m. Saturday when he lost control of the vehicle. Griswold eventually crashed onto the pavement, causing he and his passenger to be ejected, according to car accident reports.

Troopers said Griswold was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. He was transported by emergency medical personnel to an area hospital, but he later was pronounced dead as a result of his injuries, car accident reports state.

Griswold’s passenger, identified in car accident reports only as a 45-year-old woman, was wearing a helmet at the time of the wreck. She was transported to an area hospital for treatment of injuries described by authorities as non-life-threatening.

The crash still is under investigation by the Washington State Patrol. Car accident reports available Sunday provide few details about what authorities believe led to the crash, and it is unclear whether factors like speed, inattentive driving or intoxication are suspected to have contributed.
