Matthew Hammond Enters Plea After Walla Walla Crash That Injured Wes Cook

A man facing multiple criminal charges for allegedly crashing into a Washington State Patrol trooper’s vehicle while driving erratically and without his headlights activated has pleaded not guilty.

Matthew R. Hammon, 30, of Walla Walla, last week pleaded not guilty to possession of methamphetamine, reckless driving, driving under the influence and using drug paraphernalia. Trial is tentatively set for May 6 in Walla Walla County Superior Court.

Washington State Patrol trooper Wes Cook was one of several law enforcement personnel who responded to a local Walmart on Feb. 16 to investigate a reported theft. Cook’s vehicle was struck by Hammond’s while Hammond was turning from Taumarson Road onto Peppers Bridge Road.

Washington State Patrol officials told local media outlets that Hammond was driving recklessly and did not have his headlights activated at the time of the crash.

Both Cook and Hammond suffered minor injuries in the wreck, authorities said. Troopers said both men were treated at Providence St. Mary Medical Center.

A passenger in Hammond’s vehicle, Symantha Gray, 39, of Milton-Freewater, reportedly also was injured and was taken to an area hospital for treatment.
