A pedestrian who died after he was hit by a car on the 10 Freeway around 2:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 28, 2015, has been identified as Eloi Vasquez, 19, a freshman UC Berkeley student and soccer player who went missing after leaving a fraternity party near campus. The deadly pedestrian accident occurred near Vermont Avenue.

One family and thousands at the university are now left to mourn the bittersweet news that Vasquez, a popular and soft-spoken student who called and told a friend that he was lost after walking away from the party, has been found and then lost again. Over the weekend, Vasquez’ family had posted a $100,000 reward for news of his whereabouts.

Identification of the deceased pedestrian as Vasquez was made Monday by the Los Angeles County Coroner’s office. Further examination of the body was scheduled for Tuesday.

The fatal collision happened when Vasquez attempted to cross the 10 Freeway on foot and was hit by a driver traveling 60 mph who said the collision was unavoidable, according to California Highway Patrol investigators. No charges have yet been filed against the driver who hit and killed Vasquez, but the accident remains under investigation.

The shock of losing a loved one killed in a pedestrian accident with a vehicle can turn a family’s life upside-down. Handling necessary insurance claims and other financial and legal problems that result from accidental death can be nearly impossible at such an emotional time. Our deepest sympathies go out to the family of Eloi Vasquez.
