A two-vehicle crash at Taft, California, 29 miles from Bakersfield, left a man with severe injuries. He got identified as 64-year-old Lloyd Watrous.

According to the report by the California Highway Patrol, the accident occurred on Midway Road at about 4:45 p.m. A male driver, Karl Orrebrand, 52, was driving a 2007 Ford Van, when he crashed into a 2010 Jeep Wrangler, driven by Christopher Cazares. 30.

Orrebrand was making a left turn to North Lincoln Street when he suddenly veered off his lane and crashed into Cazares, who was on the road heading east.  The two drivers had passengers in their car, including Watrous.

The injured man was traveling in the Jeep, and it took the combined effort of first responders to extricate him from the vehicle. He was flown to Kern Medical, where he underwent treatment for his injuries.

A passenger in the van, identified as Mary Reed, 22, sustained minor injuries and got treated at the scene of the accident. The authorities are investigating the cause of the crash, and for now, alcohol and drugs do not seem to have played a role.

Orrebrand has not been charged with causing the accident, and the police have not stated if they plan to charge him. Accidents are not uncommon in California and happen every day throughout the state.

There are different reasons why people get into accidents. The most common ones are over speeding, drunk driving, drowsiness, driving on the wrong lane, and sometimes, manufacturers defect.

The person who causes an accident often bears the liability. Depending on the circumstances of the case, the person can face a criminal or civil suit.
