Elderly Pedestrian Hit In San Marcos, Later Dies

In a tragic accident, an 83-year-old woman has died after being hit by an SUV that was backing out of a parking spot at a San Marcos retirement community early Wednesday morning.

She was using a walker to pass behind the SUV as the 83-year-old driver, a friend, was backing out of his parking spot, CHP Officer Jim Bettencourt said.

The woman’s friend was going to give her a ride to another part of the complex. He told her to wait on the curb, but she may have been confused about where to go, Bettencourt said. Instead of waiting on the curb, she stepped behind the SUV and was struck, suffering fatal injuries.

The driver immediately stopped the SUV and assisted her, pulling her out from underneath the vehicle. Paramedics took the woman to a trauma center. Her death was confirmed about an hour later, according to the CHP. The woman’s name was not released.
