Julianna Chambers, 13, was killed in a collision in Hammond, Illinois, after the car she was in was hit by another vehicle fleeing police.
Chambers and her grandmother, Theresa Paramo, 57, were driving home from an orthodontist appointment at around 4:30 on Wednesday when their SUV was struck by a speeding Dodge Durango at the intersection of Columbia Avenue and Gostlin Street.
The driver of the Durango was a 31-year-old man who was fleeing from police after his passenger, a 27-year-old woman, stole a case of beer from a store in East Chicago and then fled after being ordered to stop by a nearby police officer.
Following the crash, Chambers was taken to a nearby hospital where she was pronounced dead. Her grandmother is also hospitalized, and remains in critical condition.
The passenger of the Durango was also hospitalized with minor injuries. Both the driver and the passenger are in custody and face charges.
