A fatal multi-vehicle accident resulted in tragedy Wednesday night, May 13, when nine vehicles, including a semi tractor-trailer, were involved in a pile-up near Chapman Avenue that killed Eric McEntarffer, age 28, of Fontana and injured several others. The 57 Freeway was closed for several hours as crews worked to clear wreckage from the roadway after the massive wreck.
More hospitalized after accident
Five more people were hospitalized for injuries suffered in this catastrophic motor vehicle accident. Eric McEntarffer was confirmed dead by the office of the coroner, which stated that his vehicle had been hit by a semi.
A deadly sequence of events
According to California Highway Patrol investigators, the deadly multi-car wreck occurred shortly after 7 p.m., beginning when the driver of a semi carrying a forklift hit a Honda Civic. The semi pushed the Civic completely through a center divider, where oncoming traffic began crashing into the first two vehicles, ultimately killing McEntarffer and injuring the others.
Did trucking negligence cause fatal accident?
News sources quoted CHP investigators as saying that the semi truck driver had “lost control” of the big rig, carrying a forklift, before hitting McEntarffer’s automobile. It is unclear whether the big truck accident occurred because of excessive speed, or simply driver negligence in not slowing sooner, with the additional weight of a forklift on board.
If the driver of the tractor-trailer truck was negligent, or if the accident was caused by defective equipment on the big rig, like faulty brakes, McEntarffer’s family will likely pursue a wrongful death claim against the company that owns the truck and against the driver. Others injured in the accident might pursue personal injury claims against the same defendants. In either case, Plaintiffs could get monetary compensation to help cover the costs of tragic losses of life and limb caused by this horrible trucking accident.
