The Coachella Valley is reeling from the loss of Douglas Decker — the fifth pedestrian to be killed in the area just this year.
The Cathedral City resident was crossing at the intersection of Calle El Segundo and Arenas Road in Palm Springs at about 8:30 pm Friday night, when he was struck by a vehicle. He was pronounced dead later that night at Desert Regional Medical Center.
Authorities say drugs and alcohol were not a factor in the crash.
In 2016 so far, the Coachella Valley has seen an unusually high number of fatal pedestrian accidents. Just a week prior, 10 year old Bobby Adams of Palm Desert was struck and killed at the intersection of Monterey Avenue at Hahn Road.
In addition, Harry Pedersen, 79, of Leduc, Alberta, Canada was killed on Palm Canyon Drive in Palm Springs on February 22. Joseph Eilers, 22, of Palm Desert was killed on Feb 15, and Jose Ramos, 39, of Desert Hot Springs was killed on January 22.
The sudden spike in pedestrian deaths in the area should be cause for alarm. Something like this is usually a great indicator that there is some sort of problem that needs solving.
