On Tuesday afternoon, a parent driving a black SUV accidentally plowed into a group of people in a school parking lot in Sylmar Tuesday afternoon, officials said. Five students and a staff member were hospitalized following the accident, suffering non-life threatening injuries. The students were sixth and seventh graders.
According to school superintendent Adriana Abich, the parent was picking up his son or daughter when he accidentally pressed the accelerator. The car then collided with another car and struck the pedestrians in the school parking lot connecting the campuses.
“His acceleration pedal got stuck and he jumped the curb and hit a few of our students. We’re really, really thankful to those first responders who came out here within minutes…,” Abich added.
The collision happened outside the Sylmar Education Complex, which houses three schools, at about 2:15 p.m. in the 13300 block of Glenoaks Boulevard, the Los Angeles Fire Department said.
