In the early hours of Monday, February 24th, a woman lost her life after a hit-and-run driver ran her down. The Los Angeles Police Department has identified her as Morena Del Carmen Alvarado-Lopez, 58.
The accident happened at Echo Park, near the intersection of Sunset Boulevard and White Knoll Road. Alvarado-Lopez and her husband, Juan Bahena, 71, had just left Club Bahia and were attempting to cross the road when they both got hit.
A surveillance video obtained from the club showed the couple leaving the club at about 12:50 a.m. A few minutes after, a burgundy or red four-door passenger vehicle hit Alvarado-Lopez and Bahena,
The driver stopped for a few moments before taking off again without helping the couple. The impact of the crash threw the couple fifty feet from where they stood, according to the LAPD.
Alvarado-Lopez and Bahena suffered severe injuries but lived long to get to the County USC Medical Center, where doctors tried to save their lives. The woman died at the hospital, but her husband survived.
The LAPD is looking for the driver of the car, and have asked the public to contact their office if they have any useful information. The front of the vehicle got dented, and the police believe it would help them narrow their search.
The family of the deceased has also offered a $50 000 reward for anyone with information on the driver. People with tips who want to stay anonymous should also call Crimestoppers or submit it online on their website.
A hit-and-run resulting in death is a severe felony in California. Offenders usually face a vehicular manslaughter charge which comes with a 4 to 10 years prison sentence.
