A DUI accident on Wednesday, February 26th, in Sonoma, a town close to Oakland, California, injured a man. The man got identified as Victor Baltazar, of Cameron Park.
The accident happened on Highway 12 at the intersection of Eighth Street East. The California Highway Patrol, in its statement, said the collision occurred at about 10:38 p.m.
At that time, a 78-year-old driver of a semi-truck who was under the influence of alcohol made a dangerous turn on Highway 12. The move sent the semi directly into the path of a pickup truck driven by Baltazar.
The truck hit the back axle of the big rig and stopped instantly. Baltazar, who had five passengers with him, had minor injuries with only back pain and got treated at the scene by paramedics.
When the police got to the scene, they arrested the driver on suspicion of DUI and charged him accordingly. The police also found out that the man was driving on an expired license.
The investigation into the crash remains ongoing. The state of California frowns at drivers who get behind the wheel when intoxicated, and when a death or injury occurs, they get charged with a criminal felony.
Drivers are held to a high standard as a slip on the road can cost a life. Commercial drivers under state and federal laws are not allowed to drive with more than a .04 BAC.
The California Vehicle Code 23152 makes it clear that it is unlawful for a commercial driver to have more than the above in his or her bloodstream. Thus, drivers should stay away from alcohol before and when driving.
