A motorcycle accident on Highway 330 claimed the life of a man from Riverside, California. The San Bernardino County Coroner’s Office on Tuesday, March 3rd, identified him as David Lee Thompson, 59.
Thompson lost his life following the accident approximately 1.7 miles north of Highland Avenue on Saturday morning February 29th. The California Highway Patrol stated that the deceased was riding a 2006 Honda Motorcycle north on 330.
The motorcyclist approached a left curve in the road at top speed and drifted right, before crashing into a guardrail several times. The man was ejected from the motorcycle and hit the guardrail and the road.
The San Bernardino County Fire Department and paramedics responded to a call about the accident. They found Thompson with extensive injuries and took him to St. Bernardine Medical Center, where he died at about 12:20 p.m.
The CHP has not uncovered if drugs and alcohol played a role in the accident. They are still investigating the crash and have asked anyone with information to contact their San Bernardino office.
Motorcycle accidents are not uncommon in California, with over 800 000 registered motorcycle riders in the state. Most motorcycle crashes, about 80% lead to fatalities, and those who survive, sometimes have life-altering injuries.
Motorcycle riders are killed 26 times more frequently than drivers involved in car accidents on a per-mile basis. Most bike accidents involve the intoxication of the motorcyclist, and about 25% of motorcyclists don’t have a valid license.
The best way to prevent fatalities in motorcycle accidents is by wearing protective covering and helmets. Also, riders should avoid drinking and driving and maintain the speed limit.
