The driver of the Jetta never made it to the hospital and was pronounced dead by the medics at the scene of the accident. Culver sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was taken by land ambulance to Kern Medical Center for treatment.

When an accident occurs, California law provides that authorities investigate to find out on whose side the liability lies. Often, when a rear-end collision occurs, authorities find that the negligence lies with the driver who drove into the vehicle in front.

At other times, the liability lies with the driver in front. Whatever the case is, several lawsuits arise from a rear-ended accident, and it can either be criminal or civil.

When a person dies or gets injured, prosecutors bring a vehicular manslaughter charge or grievous bodily harm depending on the extent of the injury. A convicted person then faces jail time or fine, and can also face a wrongful death or personal injury lawsuit to make restitution to the family of the deceased or the injured person.
