A man has been arrested by the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department for causing the death of his passenger in a tragic crash while fleeing law enforcement in Jurupa Valley, California. Authorities detained the suspect on Thursday, March 26, two years after the fatal collision.
Reporting the incident, a representative of the county sheriff’s department, Sgt. Ernie Esquibel confirmed that the arrest was made following a two-year investigation into a fatality recorded on September 29, 2018.
The mishap began when Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to Agua Mansa Road and Brown Avenue to curb a reported traffic disturbance.
Upon their arrival, responding officers discovered an illegal sideshow taking place at the street’s intersection, disrupting major travel routes. Officers dispersed the spectators and car enthusiasts blocking off the street and shut down the illegal display of car tricks.
In the process, police sighted a two-occupant 2006 Pontiac GTO among the lot, moving aggressively at the intersection, and signaled the driver to pull over.
The motorist complied at first but fled the scene at a high rate of speed as the deputies approached, narrowly missing two patrol cruisers before eventually crashing a few miles off.
As a result of the ghastly collision, the passenger in the GTO, whose name was not released, suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead on the scene.
The driver, whose name was revealed as Christian Pinon, 20, of Pomona survived the encounter.
Christian was arrested in Dana Point, Orange County, on suspicion of vehicular homicide, evading police, and assault with a deadly weapon on an officer.
He remains detained at Presley Detention Center, Riverside, where he awaits his arraignment slated for Monday, March 30, with a $1 million bail term.
