The identity of the dock worker who fell 10 feet to his death on Tuesday morning while working on the deck of a container ship at the Port of Oakland in Alameda County, California, has been revealed by the police. The Alameda County coroner’s bureau named the victim as Jarvis Dwain Haskin, a 59-year-old man from Alameda. Further updates may require the input of top accident lawyers.
Confirming the incident, a spokesperson for the Oakland Fire Department, Michael Hunt, said the accident took place at about 1:45 am on Tuesday, March 31, at Berth 58 of 1999 Middle Harbor Road.
Firefighting personnel arrived at the scene following a 911 call and learned that the dock worker fell off the ship into the underlying water. After a thorough search of the harbor area, rescue operatives found the 59-year old’s lifeless body trapped under a pier, about ten feet below the deck.
Since the body recovery, the incident has remained under investigation by the U.S Coast Guard, the coroner’s bureau, and the California Division of Occupational Safety responsible for accessing worker’s on-site safety.
Jarvis Dwain Haskin, who was a member of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union, was tasked with loading and unloading ships as well as convey cargo containers from marine terminals.
If found to have violated worksite safety regulations, the company could be held liable for the Alameda man’s death, which may result in an eventual shutdown. The family of the deceased may also consider hiring top accident lawyers to present a case against the maritime company for resulting damages.
