The motorist who died last week after crashing his vehicle into a metal gate in Diamond Bar, California, has been identified. According to updated accident reports released by the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office, the victim was Matthew Strudwick, a 21-year-old Diamond Bar man.
Officers were dispatched to the site of the wreck shortly after 12:30 am, following reports of a solo crash involving a BMW, that left two casualties in its wake. Investigators determined that Strudwick was the driver of a 1997 BMW M3 that was speeding through the south traffic lanes on State Route 39.
Upon approaching the mile marker 28.64, he encountered a left curve on the steep highway and tried to bypass it. His maneuver caused the vehicle to spiral out of control and cross into the north travel lane and towards the shoulder of the road where he crashed into a metal gate.
Police said the metal bars of the gate pierced through the driver’s door and emerged from the right rear passenger door.
Matthew Strudwick sustained fatal injuries in the crash and was declared dead at the scene by responding paramedics, the accident reports confirmed. Meanwhile, his sole passenger, whose identity was not disclosed, was transported by ambulance to a medical facility for treatment of moderate injuries.
The incident remains under investigation. The California Highway Patrol implored anyone with helpful information regarding the crash to contact the Baldwin Park Area Office.
