Authorities have identified the man killed in an early-morning crash Saturday morning about 10 miles outside of Purdy.
Jesse M. Kupietz, 39, of Gig Harbor, died at the scene of the wreck, which was reported just after 5 a.m. Saturday, according to car accident reports from the Washington State Patrol. A passenger in Kupietz’ vehicle also suffered injuries that weren’t believed to be serious, authorities said.
Troopers said Kupietz was driving east on Washington 302 at about 5 a.m. Saturday when he lost control of his vehicle. Car accident reports state that Kupietz’ pickup truck went off the roadway and hit a guardrail before it spun around and crashed into multiple trees.
Emergency medical personnel responded to the scene, but Kupietz died before he could be transported to a hospital for treatment, authorities said. His passenger, identified by authorities only as a 38-year-old Bremerton man, was treated for minor injuries at the scene of the wreck.
Neither Kupietz nor his passenger were wearing seatbelts at the time, according to car accident reports. Investigators did not say whether either man was ejected as a result of the crash.
Authorities continue to investigate the incident, and it still is unclear what caused Kupietz to lose control of his pickup truck. They have not said whether they suspect factors like speed, inattentive driving or intoxication might have contributed to the crash.
