An elderly man died earlier this week after a Caltrain fatally struck him near a train station in Redwood City, California. The tragic crash took place on Monday, May 5, as confirmed in the accident reports supplied by the San Mateo County authorities.

Confirming the incident, a Caltrain spokesperson, Alex Eisenhart, divulged that the train struck the victim at about 4 pm.

The San Mateo County Coroner’s Office has since identified the fatal victim as Jack Preston Newton, a 75-year-old man from Redwood City.

The Caltrain no. 156 was reportedly traveling south on the railroad tracks when it struck Preston on approaching the Main Street crossing. The encounter happened just south of the Redwood City station.

The man suffered fatal injuries in the train-versus-pedestrian collision, and emergency responders confirmed him dead when they arrived. As a result of the collision, all trains were delayed for hours until 4:25 pm when Caltrain allowed movement on the northbound tracks.

Moving trains within the area were restricted to a speed of 10 mph, as they maintained a single track for at least one hour. The San Mateo authorities did not disclose any additional information regarding the accident that claimed Eisenhart’s life in the accident reports.

Monday evening’s fatality in Redwood City marks the third death involving a Caltrain this year. Pedestrians need to maintain a safe distance from busy railroads at all times to avoid the occurrence of such incidents.
