Officers detained a man in Alta Vista, California, for allegedly killing a 52-year-old cyclist while driving under the influence of alcohol. The San Diego police authorities arrested the man on Wednesday, May 13, following the late-night auto-bicycle collision.

Officers responded to the crash just after 9:15 p.m. on reports of a traffic collision between a bike and a motor vehicle on Paradise Valley Road. Police said one person passed away in the encounter.

Investigators gathered that the suspect, identified as James L. Bumpus, 28, was driving through the west travel lanes on Paradise Valley Road. He was operating a 2008 Saab 9-3 sedan when he veered into the north shoulder of the roadway and struck a bicycle rider, who was at the time riding along the road’s edge.

Emergency responders arrived shortly after the mishap and found the biker severely injured on the roadway. They transported him to a hospital, where he eventually passed away from his wounds. The fatal victim’s name remains withheld following notification of his family.

Meanwhile, Bumpus did not suffer injuries in the wreck. Field sobriety tests confirmed the motorist was under the influence at the time. Deputies took the man into custody on suspicion of felony DUI.

Drunk driving is a major bane to road users, as it is one of the leading causes of traffic fatalities globally. Pedestrians, cyclists,  other motorists, and even the DUI driver are at risk in such collisions.

Traffic officials encourage motorists to avoid consuming alcohol or any controlled substance before operating a vehicle. In the event of a DUI crash, the liable party can face months to several years imprisonment, depending on the magnitude of damage caused. Such motorists would need to hire a drunk driving attorney to ensure adequate representation during the legal proceedings.
