In the Mecca area of California, a 47-year-old man lost his life in an auto-pedestrian accident on Saturday, June 13th. The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department identified the victim as Miguel Cruz.

The accident report disclosed that the collision took place at approximately 9 p.m. at the intersection of Date Palm Street and 66th Avenue. The preliminary investigation did not uncover the build of the car involved or the driver.

The RCSO said that emergency responders found Cruz lying on the right shoulder of the roadway, and he passed away at the scene of the accident. The hunt for the hit-and-run driver is underway, and the investigation is ongoing. Anyone with helpful information should contact the sheriff’s station.

Under California law, a hit-and-run accident occurs when a person driving a car strikes another individual, vehicle, or stationary property, and leaves the scene without rendering help or leaving behind his or her contact information and insurance details. Prosecutors try it either as a misdemeanor or felony, depending on the circumstances of the case.

In convicting an offender, the court would look at the fact that the person while driving committed an illegal or failed to perform a legal act, and the omission or commission thereof led to the injury or death of another or damage to property. If there’s a death, the person will face a vehicular manslaughter charge.

The latter carries a maximum of ten years imprisonment in state prison, and offenders also pay a fine. The family or representative of the victim can also sue the offender to recover damages for the loss suffered.
