The Palmdale Sheriff’s Station has revealed the name of the pedestrian who was struck and killed on June 30 on Challenger Way, near Palmdale, California.
He is 67-year-old Fredrick Garrabrant.
Officials with the station said Garrabrant was cross a dark section of the road near Palmdale around 9:39 pm.
According to a media release, a witness reported that the pedestrian was crossing from the west side of the street to the east while pulling a wagon.
The witness reportedly told Garrabrant that a vehicle was coming but he continued to cross the road.
Meanwhile, a 1990 Honda Accord reached the dark area and the driver apparently didn’t spot Garrabrant. The vehicle struck him and his wagon in the northbound lane.
Garrabrant was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident by the Los Angeles County Fire Department’s personnel who responded to the scene.
Sheriff’s officials said the unnamed driver of the Honda did not seem to be impaired or under the influence of drugs or alcohol. The individual stayed at the scene and cooperated with law enforcement officials.
However, the accident remains under investigation and further details could be provided at a later date.
According to the California Office of Traffic Safety, fatalities dropped by 8.3 percent from 3,884 in 2017 to 3,563 in 2018.
While overall pedestrian fatalities declined from 940 in 2017 to 893 in 2018, the number of victims age 65 and older increased marginally from 194 to 195.
