On Wednesday, July 8th, a Riverside County Superior Court Judge Harold Hopp, ruled that the man who struck two pedestrians and killed one of them in an accident in Palm Springs, California, should stand trial for murder. Leroy Silva, the 85-year-old defendant, would also face other charges, including a hit-and-run and DUI.
According to the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office, the man was driving under the influence when he fatally injured Connie Clark of Lemon Grove on July 27th, 2019. The victim and another woman were crossing Calle Encilia outside the Agua Clientele Casino in Palm Springs.
The accident report showed that the crash happened around 7:50 p.m., and the Palm Springs Police found Silva, who was driving a black sedan 40 minutes after. He was roughly a mile from the crash site, and officers took him into custody on suspicion of hit-and-run and driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
The DA amended it on August 9th, 2019, to include murder after Clark died in the hospital a week after the crash. Silva appeared in person at the Larson Justice Center in Indio, and he waived his right to a preliminary hearing.
Judge Hopp found sufficient cause for the man to answer the murder charge and scheduled a post-preliminary hearing arraignment for Thursday, July 23rd. Silva remains in custody at the Riverside County Jail in place of a $1 million bail bond. There is no additional information.
