On Monday, July 13th, the California Highway Patrol revealed that they are investigating a car crash that left a woman injured and another dead in Bakersfield, California. They identified the wounded victim as Juliet Parilla, 23, and Gabrielle Bay Delong, 34, as the fatal motorist.
Facts from the accident report showed that at about 11 p.m. on Saturday, July 11th, Parilla was heading north on Melcher Road at the intersection of Pond Road. The woman failed to stop at an intersection completely and collided with a Ford Fusion driven by Delong.
The impact left the older woman with severe wounds, and the CHP said she died at the scene. The younger woman suffered significant injuries, and the paramedics took her to Kern Medical Center for treatment. Drugs and alcohol are currently not considered factors in the accident.
Driving through an intersection is ordinarily not difficult, but drivers still get into accidents by committing three errors. The first is making a left turn across the path of an oncoming vehicle; the second is committing a stop sign violation, and the third is disobeying a traffic signal.
Drivers can mitigate the above by driving defensively even if they have the right of way. Stop fully at all stop signs and proceed only when it is safe to do so, stop at red lights even when turning right, stop for pedestrians at all times, slow down while approaching the intersection, and never speed up to make a yellow light.
