Elder Abuse and Assault Suspect Jose Avila Jr. Arrested by Irwindale Police

Jose Avila Jr.

A month after a man assaulted an older person in Irwindale, California, officers with the Irwindale Police Department identified and arrested him. The alleged attacker, Jose Avila Jr., 33, of South El Monte, was taken into custody on Tuesday, August 11th.

The police said that surveillance videos showed that in the early hours of Sunday, July 12th, the victim, Jose Sanchez, a 61-year-old grandfather, stood outside his pickup truck at an Arco gas station. The suspect then exited his Honda Pilot and approached the older man.

The two appeared to be having a conversation when Avila Jr. suddenly punched the victim, sending him to the ground unconscious. Medics took Sanchez to the hospital with severe head injuries and brain trauma. He suffered memory loss and cannot remember the attack.

The police said that the younger man had left the scene when they arrived, and an anonymous tipster identified him as the attacker. Avila Jr. was taken into custody around 5:30 p.m. on charges of attempted homicide and elder abuse likely to cause great bodily harm or death.

The suspect remains in custody at the West Covina Police Department Jail, with his bail bond set at more than $2 million. Attempted homicide under the California Penal Code is a lesser charge than homicide because it lacks the elements of willful, deliberate, and premeditated actions. A conviction means five, seven, or nine years, in state prison, and a fine up to $10,000.
