Richard Hanson Suffers Injuries Following Multiple Vehicle Collision in Cartago

On Tuesday, September 8th, the Cartago Police Department identified 80-year-old Richard Hanson of Bishop as the man who sustained severe injuries in a multiple vehicle collision. The occurrence happened in Cartago, California.

The car accident report placed the collision time at about 7:43 p.m. on Monday, September 7th. It occurred on Highway 395 north of Crystal Geyser at Lone Willow Dip in Inyo County.

The preliminary investigation uncovered that traffic ahead of Hanson stopped due to two lanes merging down into a single southbound lane. The victim allegedly traveled at high speed and failed to stop in time to avoid a collision.

He crashed his Land Rover into the back of a black 2009 Chevy Silverado pickup truck operated by Jessica Juarez-Valenzl, a 29-year-old resident of Phoenix, Arizona. The collision force sent the second car into a grey 2019 Toyota Yaris, driven by 32-year-old Lancaster resident, Jesse Mendoza.

Medics transported Hanson to Southern Inyo Hospital for treatment, and there’s no update on his condition at this time. Juarez-Valenzl and Mendoza did not sustain any wound in the incident.

The crash led to the closure of the highway’s northbound and southbound lanes for an hour. The investigation remains active.

When traveling on a roadway, a motorist must maintain a speed that allows them to stop in time to avoid a collision. California’s Basic Speed Law provides that a driver must never travel faster than is safe for the roadway’s current conditions.
