Man Killed in Accident in Crawford County Identified as Justin Taunton of Thomaston

The Georgia Department of Transportation (“GDOT”) is investigating a crash that took place on the morning of February 25.

According to the GDOT, one person is dead and another is injured after a collision occurred on US-Highway 80/GA-22 in Crawford County on Tuesday morning. The deceased driver has been identified as 32-year-old Justin Taunton of Thomaston and his family has been notified.

Preliminary reports indicated that the crash happened early on February 25 near Billy White Road, just west of Roberta when a car and tractor trailer collided at the intersection.

According to Crawford County Coroner Sheldon Mattox, he received a call about the accident involving two vehicles at approximately 7 a.m. The driver of the car was pronounced dead at the scene and the driver of the tractor-trailer was taken to a local hospital. Mattox later identified the victim as Justin Taunton.

At this time, the identity of and the extent of the injuries to the tractor-trailer driver has not been released. Reports did not indicate whether the drivers were wearing seat belts.

The Georgia State Patrol is handling the investigation at this time. All areas of distracted driving will be investigated. The Georgia State Patrol will also investigate to see if weather or speed contributed to the accident.
